Course Preview – Riviera Country Club

Ted Freaking Potter holding off DJ for the victory. It was incredible how he held his own despite being outdriven by about 30-40 yards every hole.

This week we are head down the west coast to Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. Although last year was the first sponsored by Genesis, the course history can still look to previous leaderboards as Riviera Country Club has been the main constant for this tournament. The course has held the tournament on a continuous basis from 1973.  From looking at the previous winners list below, this can be a bomber’s paradise due to the length of the course.  In 2015 weather played a huge role in keeping the winning score to single digits under par.

Previous Winners

2017: Dustin Johnson -17
2016: Bubba Watson -15
2015: James Hahn -6
2014: Bubba Watson -15
2013: John Merrick -11

Riviera CC – 7,325 yards / Par 71

When you look at the yardage of the course, with one less par 5, this course is long.  There are 6 par 4’s that are over 450, with 4 of them coming on the back 9.  This is a difficult course that has an average score over par.  The greens are also small meaning we need our players to be dialed in on the approach shots.  Throw in hard to hit fairways and we have ourselves a tough course.  With hard to hit fairways, the extra distance from golfers can ease the length of approach shots into the green.  We will be targeting a mix of ball strikers and bombers in our rosters.  We get our Poa Annua greens as well at Riviera so we can look to see who excels on this type of grass.

This week once again we should not have to worry about weather. Temps will be in the upper 60’s and low 70s for the tournament on Thursday and Friday. Winds will be minimal and if anything changes we will make updates accordingly.
