Course Preview – PGA National Champ Course

Well Bubba Watson manages to win the Genesis Open after saying on Tuesday he would consider withdrawing from the event if his tee time did not allow him to make it to the NBA Celebrity game. Bubba has his own style of golf and it seems his health is better than it has been in years and he may be back. Congrats to him holding off a slew of guys that came into contention on Saturday. This week we head to my backyard for the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Course

PGA National Championship Course – 7,140 yards / Par 70

I have played PGA National Championship over a dozen times in the past year and the most important thing is to keep the ball near the fairways, away from the 78 sand traps, 26 water hazards and out of the dense rough. This course played as the second most difficult last year (outside of the majors) and the Bear Trap (holes 15, 16, 17) played an average of 3.44 strokes over par since 2007.

Ball strikers have always fared well here since keeping the ball in the fairway is so crucial. Many of the holes (especially par 3’s) have greens that funnel balls onto the fringe and fairway/rough, so you have to be very accurate with approach shots to keep the ball on the green. Wind almost will certainly have an impact as the course is near less than 5 miles from the coast and is very open. I am going to keep this short since ball striking is what I want to emphasize for everyone this week. I will be on site Tuesday taking pictures of the course. Thursday and Friday I will be a standard bearer for a foursome which I will keep you all updated with as the week goes on.

Weather

Like I said above wind will almost certainly play a role this week and winds are usually pretty steady throughout the day. Currently early on in the week, the forecast is showing winds around 15 mph sustained and gusts up to 25 mph. Temps will be in the upper 70’s with sun. I will update this section as the week goes on.
