Muirfield Village Course Preview

The Memorial Tournament brings us a solid field this week.  This tournament has been held at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio since 1976.   Muirfield Village Golf Club was designed by the one and only Jack Nicklaus. Growing up in greater Columbus, Nicklaus wanted to help give back to the city that helped him become the golfer/person he was.

Similar to last week,  The Memorial Tournament is one of 5 tournaments on the PGA Tour awarded invitational status.  With only 120 golfers in play and T70 making it through to the weekend, 6/6 lineups “should” be high.  However, if the chalk busts, we saw what can happen.

Muirfield Village Golf Club is your standard Par 72 golf course at 7,392 yards with 4 par 5’s and 4 par 3’s with the remainder being Par 4’s.  It is important to note that the Par 5’s are all reachable in 2 by most golfers. The fairways are wide but you can not miss as the rough is very thick.  The premiere ball strikers have succeeded here and we will want to target the golfers that excel from the tee to green.  The greens are small and fast which will make the approach shot very important.  If you miss the greens, there are plenty of VERY difficult bunkers and thick rough that will make scrambling very important to avoid any high scores.

Key Statistics

SG: Tee to Green: This is the most consistent statistic each week that we utilize to target the best ball strikers.  The fairways are on the wider side but the rough is very thick.  You do not want to be approaching the small and quick greens from the rough.  Without being able to spin the ball as much out of the rough, it will be tough to stick the greens from the rough.  As we said earlier, the small and quick greens will be very important to hit. We want the golfers that are strong off the tee and dialed in on their approach shots. Around the green play will also be relevant to limit the big numbers posted from missed greens.

Par 4 Scoring: The Par 4’s are where we can gain an edge targeting the top golfers in this category.  Several of the Par 4’s play over par so we want to target the guys playing par or better on these holes to gain strokes on the rest of the field.

Greens in Regulation %:  The greens and Muirfield Village Golf Club are on the smaller side and are quick.  We want to target the players with the highest GIR%.  This will help us find the players that are really dialed in with their approach shots.  The more greens our players hit, the less we have to sweat.

Scrambling: The greens are surrounded by thick rough and difficult bunkers.  In case our golfers miss the greens, we want to roster the ones that are able to avoid disaster.  I don’t want to see any spider webs on the shot tracker as seen in previous weeks by Keegan Bradley.

Birdie or Better %:  As always with daily fantasy scoring, the birdies and eagles are where we gain points.  We want to target the golfers with the highest BoB% as that is where you can really accumulate points.
